Our second mixtape comes from Bang the Party, popular Toronto-based DJs Andycapp & Rod (Todd) Skimmins. They describe their project as “a return to the ideals of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s New York scene: a time when pop, art, and dance music had not yet been divided and when disco was in bed with everything that moved. Not the disco most remember, John Travolta in that gleaming white suit but the disco that embraced any groove or bass heavy music- be it Sister Sledge, A Certain Ratio, or Arthur Russell: an amalgamation of false starts, wobbly rhythms, and glued together experiments.” To that you could add Brazilian tropicalia, krautrock, post-punk dance, hip hop, minimalist house—anything that broadens the rules of what dance music can be.
Now working out of the Drake Underground, Bang the Party’s next party is October 22, featuring Andycapp and a live set by The Makeover (Jeremy Glenn & Rod Skimmins). Here’s what they have to say about their contribution to StandardTapes…
About eight or nine years ago, I played a four hour set at one of my residencies in London, Ontario (back when I was living there). From the the moment I started until the moment I ended, every single record I played got a great response, each record mixed brilliantly into the next covering everything from dub reggae to punk funk, to classic hip-hop, to boggie, disco, funk, house, techno, and Brazilian drum n’ bass, and no one left the floor (well, except to go to the washroom).
Thinking it was some sort of divine intervention, I copied down all the tracks I played in the right order and have kept it with me ever since. Obviously the tracklisting is out dated but I always remember the feel and vibe of that set and try to emulate it every time I play out: keep it eclectic, keep it fun, throw in classics, present new material, always take chances, and above all play what you like. —Andycapp
