BADBADNOTGOOD
From: Toronto, Ontario
Playing: Wrongbar (1279 Queen St. West), 12 a.m.
About: Have you ever wanted to see a mosh pit at a jazz show? If you have, then up-and-coming Toronto trio (and this week’s NOW Magazine cover subjects BADBADNOTGOOD are the band for you. According to their Twitter, there’s a good chance you’ll hear new songs from the group’s upcoming BADBADNOTGOOD2 mixtape.
CLOUD NOTHINGS
From: Cleveland, Ohio
Playing: Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor St. West), 12 a.m.
About: Their name might sound twee, but there’s absolutely nothing precocious about Pitchfork-approved Cloud Nothings. After playing several high-profile shows at SXSW last week, the quartet bring their lo-fi garage rock to Lee’s Palace with Kingston’s PS I Love You also on the bill. Bring earplugs.
LUNICE
From: Montreal, Quebec
Playing: Wrongbar (1279 Queen St. West), 1 a.m.
About: Deftly moving between drum & bass, 8-bit electronica and hip-hop, Lunice has produced songs for the likes of Azealia Banks and G-Side, not to mention put out remixes on labels including Mad Decent, XL Recordings, and Young Turks. Also he occasionally dances like this at shows.
SHEEZER
From: Toronto, Ontario
Playing: Sneaky Dee’s (431 College St.), 3 a.m.
About: What better way to wind down your Friday night than by catching Toronto’s all-female Weezer cover band Sheezer at Sneak’s? For a taste of what you can expect, you can download the band’s New Year’s Eve set at the El Mocambo here. Get there early to avoid disappointment.
SPOEK MATHAMBO
From: Johannesburg, South Africa
Playing: The Great Hall (1087 Queen St. West), 11 p.m.
About: So far in his career, rapper/singer Spoek Mathambo has reworked Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control” as a dark dance track, recorded a debut album that merges various genres with lyrics about the trials and tribulations he faced growing up in South Africa, and signed to Sup Pop. One to watch.
