The Habs’ biggest acquisition of the off-season gives them a towering presence in the corners, er, on the corner. Today a joint venture between The Cadillac Fairview Corporation Limited, Canderel, the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ and the Club de hockey Canadien consortium unveiled their plans to build ‘Tour des Canadiens,’ a 48-storey residential building next to Montreal’s Bell Centre – home of the Montreal Canadiens – on the current site of Centennial Place. (The Centennial exhibit will be stored during construction and displayed in the new building upon completion.) The plan bears a resemblance to Toronto’s Maple Leaf Square development with the inclusion of a high end sports bar and other entertainment facilities in the condominium complex (insert hockey joke to the tune of, “Oh gee I hope that’s the only thing Montreal is copying off the Leafs, eh?”). Units, designed by architects Cardinal Hardy and Martin Marcotte/Beinhaker with interior design by Huma Design, start at $250,000 and offer buyers a direct connection to Bell Centre, the metro and underground Montreal.
