Jane Austen devotees take note: you’ll either love this book or want to burn it. It’s never easy writing the sequel to one of the best-loved books of the English language, so perhaps turning it into a crime thriller isn’t such a terrible idea. The famous detective novelist and author of Children of Men, P. D. James has released the latest novel in the omnibus of Pride and Prejudice spin-offs, Death Comes to Pemberley. Step back into 1803, where empire waists abound and Darcy and Elizabeth are married and finally allowed to hold hands in public. Everything about the high society life seems pretty great, until Elizabeth’s little sister Lydia pays a visit to announce that her husband, Wickham, has been murdered. Make of it what you will, this book will probably end up in many a holiday stocking this season. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
