Smart Hoe, or, the Best Rap Video of 2012
Reading just got hype.

This clip came to my attention via the British music critic Alex Macpherson, who said: “Fierce gay rappers are the future.” But Zebra Katz’s new single also draws on the past, taking its disdainful refrain from voguing slang and continuing the hip-hop tradition of proud autodidacticism. “Step up yo vocab,” as Bun B sneered. Here, though, the MC almost seems to identify as “that bitch” before promising to take him/her to college and provide some knowledge. Between the Satanic projections, creepily empty beat and faceless schoolgirls giving their best Arbus, “Ima Read” could be the recruitment video for an academy of dark arts.
