Master Sommelier John Szabo offers up his best wine bets for the coming weekend.
2009 DOMAINE DU CHARDONNAY CHABLIS AC, Burgundy, France $19.95 #183574
The appropriately named Domaine du Chardonnay crafts a particularly clean, lean, lively and fresh version of the un-oaked chardonnay classic, with bright acids and fine, lingering finish. It’s extremely appealing all around, with cut and class at a nice price, too. Serve with grilled freshwater fish or oysters at 8º-10ºC. Best 2012-2014.
2005 KATOGI & STROFILIA XINOMAVRO AO Naoussa, Greece $17.95 #249615
Attention Italian red wine drinkers: here is a must-try for you. If you like the firm, gritty and juicy texture of grapes like sangiovese and nebbiolo, then Xinomavro from northern Greece should become part of your drinking repertoire. This wine is nicely mature, savoury, spicy and earthy, with firm texture and flavours in the resinous, dried red berry fruit and pot pourri spectrum. Excellent depth and length for the money ($18 Barolo anyone?). Decant and serve at 16º-18º with salty protein, roasts, braises and stews. Best 2012-2015.
