Seems like Torontonians aren’t the only ones with subways, subways, subways on the mind. Popular web-comic xkcd posted this gem today, pondering what it would be like if all the subways systems across North America were connected (click here for a larger version).
It’s not exactly to scale or even entirely factual. Eagle-eyed readers will spot gags like the disconnected red ring in the top left labelled ‘Springfield Monorail’ which is a reference to an episode of a popular cartoon program on FOX called The Simpsons starring Yeardley Smith. Very funny if you know the show and are familiar with the episode. Also hidden on the Washington, D.C. system just beyond the Huntington terminus is a stop labelled “Graveyard for passengers killed by closing doors,” which is apparently a reference to a warning that is played on trains there that subway doors are “not like elevator doors.” I don’t believe this is a real place but I am no expert on what goes on in Washington D.C..
Seemingly, the author felt no need to insert any jokes into Toronto’s subway map because Toronto’s subway map is itself a joke.
