Do Make Say Think: What We're Doing This Week (Feb. 16-22)
From real-life psycho thrillers to bartenders stolen from other bars, there's a lot to get up to this week.

#9: Degrassi Trivia Night, Image: A.V. Club Toronto

1. Juan Ortiz-Apuy / “American Tourister,” Thursday, February 16. After a short break, the people behind Whippersnapper Gallery are back with their latest exhibit. Known for his sculptural and print based works, Juan Ortiz-Apuy‘s latest here sees him modifying a set of travel suitcases that will inflate and deflate as people pass by the gallery. A venture that will surely gain him new, curious fans.

2. Psycho Thriller Theatre, Thursday, February 16 (until February 26). Two directors present two separate acts at Unit 102 Theatre this weekend. These psychological thrillers promise to explore what it means to feel helpless in your own home. The acts are completely independent from one another in their stories, but are interestingly intertwined through their settings and themes.

3. Wavelength Music Fest, Thursday, February 16 (until February 19). Toronto’s influential independent concert series turns twelve this year and they are celebrating in style with a bunch of shows this weekend. Featuring sets from high-profile local bands like Fucked Up and Odonis Odonis, visual art installations and workshops. It will be truly a great weekend for Toronto’s music scene.

4. STOPTALKING, Friday, February 17. The first edition of this community-driven live performance series occurred in 2009, and this year’s first event looks to be bigger and more improved. With a larger roster of performers and more chance for audience interaction, there will be a large mix of storytelling, poetry, comedy and a new installation featuring artifacts from past performances to compliment the stage on which the performances are occurring.

5. Craft’d Pop-Up Shops, Saturday, February 18. Don’t miss this one-day pop-up shop put on by the Material Art and Design Department of OCAD University. There will be fiber, jewelry and ceramic art wares to purchases and also an “Open Hearts, Open Sources” event where you can bring a handmade item to trade in for a handmade handkerchief. Perfect for all you DIY junkies out there!

6. Flip: How to Make a Delicious Tea, Saturday, February 18. Obviously, I thought this event WOULD teach me how to make a delicious tea, because I am known to be a bit of a tea-aholic. Nevertheless, the art fan in me is still greatly excited by this event being held at Art Metropole. An ongoing project that transforms an already existing image through re-print and is then re-worked through new materials, this exhibit is set to continue to expand by adding more artistic collaborations in the future.

7. Unlovable Presents – Bartenders We Steal From Other Bars, Sunday, February 19. From this Sunday on, the cool dudes at Unlovable have a new venture up their sleeves. Every Sunday, a guest bartender from other local watering holes will take over the rails at Unlovable. This weekend, join Paul Keodprom from the Gallery catering as he serves up pints of Wellington for $4.50, and other mouth-watering deals.

8. Bingo at the Garrison, Monday, February 20. I used to love playing bingo in elementary school classes until kids started swallowing the plastic chips used as markers and ruined it for everyone. Yeah, I’m bitter, but that probably won’t stop me from coming out to play at the Garrison this Monday. Local funny-girl Sara Hennessey is your hostess for the night, and there will be prizes and cheap drinks! (Please don’t swallow the chips though, okay?).

9. Degrassi Trivia Night, Tuesday, February 21. Quick! What is Snake’s real name? If you have no idea what I’m talking about, disregard this event description. But if you were all “Obviously, Archie Simpson,” then come to the Monarch Tavern on Tuesday for their Degrassi Trivia Night. There will be three rounds of Degrassi Junior and Degrassi High trivia and they will also be screening three classic episodes. What more could you ask for? There will be none of that New Generation stuff, just good ol’ original Degrassi. Plus, it’s totally free! See you there!

10. Nathan Englander, Wednesday, February 22. Nathan Englander‘s first novel “For the Relief of Unbearable Urges” garnered the author many numerous fiction awards across the world. His third work “What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank” compiles short stories in which all the characters and stories are affected by events that happened in the 20th Century, especially (obviously) the Holocaust. Join him at the Harbourfront Centre where he will reading excerpts from this collection.
