Kim Dotcom’s controversial Mega service has finally found its legal place online in the form of a New Zealand-based domain called Mega.co.nz. Dotcom – the enigmatic founder of beleaguered data sharing service MegaUpload and MegaVideo – went on to say, “New Zealand will be the home of our new website: Mega.co.nz — Powered by legality and protected by the law.” The new site will offer an email sign-up to help its users keep up with the latest news about the service. It will also host links and information for hosting partners, investors, and developers seeking Application Programming Interfaces. Dotcom’s former plans to use the me.ga domain were scrapped when the Gabon government suspended the domain as it claims all .ga domains under its web jurisdiction and didn’t want its country to be associated with “pirates.” Mega.co.nz is set to launch on January 19th, 2013, with Dotcom’s extraditiory hearing taking place in March of 2013.
