An exhibit of early European avant-garde works covering the period from 1910 to 1918 will be coming to the Art Gallery of Ontario later this year courtesy of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exhibit, entitled The Great Upheaval: Modern Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Collection, will feature works by the likes of Modigliani, Mondrian, and Kandinsky, among others. Catalyst works for modern art movements like Kandinsky’s Blue Mountain, Mondrian’s Summer, Dune in Zeeland, and Modigliani’s Nude will be highlights of the show, who’s collection of paintings and sculptures will be exhibited chronologically.
The exhibit is the next in a line of high-profile shows the AGO has put on over the past two years, including ones focused on Picasso, Chagall, and Frida Kahlo. Imagined by Guggenheim Senior Curator Tracey Bashkoff and Associate Curator Megan Fontanella, the art featured in The Great Upheaval continues the work of these exhibits by examining how the social, technological, and cultural changes of the years surrounding the first world war shaped the vision of artists working in that time period.
The Great Upheaval: Modern Masterpieces from the Guggenheim Collection will run from November 30th 2013 to March 2nd 2014.
