The Kensington Market Historical Society, the first historical group dedicated to the area, will be holding it’s inaugural event tonight. The Society is dedicated to disseminating and collecting historical information about Kensington Market, whose history goes all the way back to 1815, when George Denison built an estate on the site that would eventually become the market. Tonight’s event will feature two speakers: Jean Cochrane, who has written a book about the history of Kensington Market, and Rosemary Donegan, an independent curator and writer whose work focuses on design and art in relation to modernism, industrialization and urban culture in Canada.

The talks will feature images of the market at different points in its history, and will discuss how the immigrant community really shaped Kensington Market into what it is today.

The event starts at 6pm, and will be held at the Lillian H. Smith Library (239 College Street). Admission is free.
