Madam Premier is a Tumblr site that was launched two days ago to showcase the often sexist criticisms female politicians in Canada face. The website shows screenshots of shocking comments made by people on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms and forums that focus on women like Kathleen Wynne and Christy Clark and their attire, sexual preferences, or lack of something phallic in or around their immediate physical space.
Created by Vancouver resident, Diamond Isinger, Madam Premier has attracted a lot of attention in two short days with radio interviews, features on CBC, and newspaper write-ups; and judging by the amount of shares Isinger has been thanking people for on her Twitter, her project is only gaining more momentum. As of yesterday, B.C. Premier Christy Clark has even added her support to the site saying, “It reflects what happens to women all the time in workplaces […] this discussion should happen.”
It’s unfortunate that even today many of the criticisms directed at our female politicians are gender biased, but we can only hope that the light shed on such comments by Madam Premier incites change. That or we start tweeting about Harper’s bad hairdo and doability.
