A riot in a Mexican prison between rival drug gangs has led to the escape of up to 30 convicts. The prison director and 18 guards at the Apodaca Jail “have been suspended and are under investigation for possible collusion in the escape,” because the governor of the state of Nuevo Leon where the prison is located believes their escape would not have been possible without the knowing assistance of the Director, or at least several prison guards. While the Mexican state has gotten progressively more effective at finding and prosecuting those involved in drug cartels, but they have simply shifted the problem to Mexico’s large and crowded prisons. And gang affiliations don’t end at the prison gates, where rival gang riots continue behind bars as they would on the street. Nuevo Leon is offering almost $800,000 (USD) for anyone with information on where the escaped convicts might be. Funny how I don’t think anyone will take them up on their offer.
