The Montreal Gazette is claiming that Toronto’s really, really, really unlikeable. Why? “I mean, other than the fact [that] Toronto is seen as an arrogant, money-obsessed, colourless ville featuring traffic backups on eight-lane highways and the worst collection of sports teams in the country?” spouts hater Jack Todd. “The answer, at least where the Maple Leafs are concerned, lies with the Toronto media.”
He goes on to outline a couple of ways Canadian (sports) media is slanted towards Toronto – Sportsnet, HNIC, people hating sports commentators like Don Cherry and Glenn Healy – and makes a few cracks about Mayor Ford before smugly reporting: “If you want us to feel sorry for you in your current plague of misfortune, a little less bias from the national media would help. Meanwhile, keep electing mayors whose main function is to provide comic relief to the entire country.”
Because taking the opportunity of Toronto’s playoff loss to feed the fire of a lukewarm (at best!) Montreal-Toronto beef with poorly justified criticisms of our sports team–not because of the actual teams themselves–but because you’re sick of hearing about us (on a national broadcaster, natch) makes us want to like you so much more. Shut up, Montreal, at least you’re still in the playoffs. (Correction: the Canadiens are not still in the playoffs, that’s how little we care about this Montreal sports mess.)
Here’s what we say to you:
