Darwin, the ‘Ikea monkey,’ arrives at sanctuary
The Ikea monkey, AKA Darwin, arrived at his new home at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ont. on Monday, reports 680 News.
The world-famous primate made headlines when it was found in the parking lot of a North York Ikea on Sunday afternoon, wearing, of all things, a shearling coat. The seven-month-old rhesus macaque was able to open his crate, escape his owner’s car and frolic around the modular furniture store’s territory, before being captured by animal control after 30 minutes.
A rhesus macaque is a prohibited animal inToronto, andDarwin’s owner was fined $240 for keeping him as a pet, and threatening both the public and the creature’s safety.
The young monkey spent Sunday night in an animal shelter, before being transferred to the primate sanctuary.
As for what’s next? Leslie Barrett, chairperson of the sanctuary’s board of directors, told 680 News, “He’s going to learn how to jump and play and act like a monkey.”
Oh, Canada.
Three newborn polar bears die at the Toronto Zoo
Three newborn polar bear cubs, born to the same mother on Thursday at the Toronto Zoo, have died. The cause of death is unclear, but zoo curator Maria Franke says the cubs were born small and undeveloped.
According to 680 News, one male cub died shortly after its birth, while the two other cubs, a male and female, died on Sunday night. The zoo does not yet know how the animals died, and says the mother, an 11-year-old bear namedAurora, was nursing the male and female after her first cub died.
680 News reports post-mortem tissue samples have been sent out for analysis.
Anne Hathaway, Letterman talk Les Mis
Anne Hathaway returned to The Late Show with David Letterman on Monday night, nearly six months after her last appearance on the show.
In July, the sardonic host allegedly spoiled the ending of The Dark Knight Rises, but this time around, it was Hathaway’s turn to ‘ruin’ the ending of her latest feature, Les Miserables.
Letterman asked Hathaway about her daring movie weight loss, saying he did not think she had “25 pounds to lose.” The Les Mis star replied and said she did indeed lose that much weight for the role, but that it wasn’t to “look hot,” and instead was because her character dies.
When asked about her methods, Hathaway said, “Oh, you don’t want to know. It would just make you worry.”
Will Hathaway and Letterman’s playful — and protective — banter help push you to see the movie, which comes out on Dec. 25?
