Gardiner Expressway = high safety risk?

Portions of the Gardiner Expressway may become increasingly unsafe to drive on in six years, according to a new engineering report obtained by the Toronto Star.

680 News writes nearly half of the elevated section of the expressway could become a high safety risk, unless it is rebuilt.

The McCormick Rankin Corp. report listed hundreds of other problems with the Gardiner, with particular focus on its severely corroded reinforced steel, and recommended a city inspection of its concrete.

Two sections of the expressway are at a high risk of having a large truck fall through it, west of Cherry Streetand by Fort York Boulevard, reports 680 News.

How should this reported problem be fixed?

Canada‘s stable income inequality

Canada’s income inequality has not changed since 1998, but the country’s median income is now 10 per cent higher than it is in the U.S, at $55,000 per year.

A new report, Income and Income Inequality: A Tale of Two Countries, found this earnings gap is worsening at a rising rate south of the border, whereas it has stayed consistent in Canada.

However, TD chief economist Craig Alexander told the Toronto Star, “I’m not saying we don’t have income inequality in Canada and that inequality isn’t a problem. What I’m saying is income inequality surprisingly – it was an absolutely stunner to me that in actual fact – since 1998 hasn’t risen.”

Meanwhile, in 1998, the average American income was 10 per cent higher than that of an average Canadian.

Arcade Fire, Oscar winners?

Is the Arcade Fire heading to the Oscar red carpet?

Seventy-five songs from feature-length motion pictures were shortlisted for the best Original Song category at the 85th Academy Awards, as announced on Tuesday.

The Arcade Fire is among them, listed for their song “Abraham’s Daughter,” which was featured on The Hunger Games soundtrack.

Also on the shortlist? Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” from her 3D concert film, Adele’s “Skyfall” from the latest Bond flick, and a new song, “Suddenly” from Les Miserables.
