LOCAL

After an Ontario ombudsman Andre Marin took sharp aim at police after the shooting death of Sammy Yatim, a Durham detective anonymously took to Twitter, calling him a “card-carrying member of al-Qaeda.” Shortly before Marin was to announce an investigation into the province’s direction to de-escalating conflict, the same Twitter account called Marin “a complete douche bag!” and added, “Why don’t you stick your big French nose up your ass instead of busines where it doesn’t belong.” [National Post]

Toronto mayor Rob Ford has lost another staffer, the eighth to be fired or resign since mid-May. Carley McNeil, Ford’s event co-ordinator who had the official title “special assistant,” was unavailable for comment, and both Ford’s chief of staff and his acting spokesman refused to comment. [Toronto Star]

A man police say is wanted for bank robberies in two Canadian cities struck again Wednesday, robbing a BMO bank at King and Bay streets. It is alleged that 44-year-old Corey Richardson is wanted for 2 bank robberies in Winnnipeg and 11 more in Toronto. [CBC] 

 

NATIONAL

Two Halifax teens face child pornography charges in the Rehtaeh Parsons case, the 17-year-old girl who was taken off life support after a suicide attempt in April. Family said she was bullied for months after a photo of her allegedly being assaulted was passed around her school. [Globe and Mail]

The Canadian subsidiary of the company responsible for the explosive train crash that devastated Lac-Megantic got the creditor protection it was seeking. Still, the judge had harsh words for the company, “since the beginning of the events, [MM&A’s] conduct has been lamentable.” [Globe and Mail]

Sun News will not receive the financial assistance they were seeking from Canada’s broadcast regulator, throwing its future into doubt. The controversial all-news channel wanted to be forced onto basic digital television subscriptions across the country, but their application was rejected. [Globe and Mail] 

 

INTERNATIONAL

Two friends of the suspected Boston Marathon bombers were indicted for obstruction of justice charges. The friends of DzhokharTsarnaev allegedly threw out fireworks and other items police say they found in Tsarnaev’s apartment just before his capture. [Globe and Mail]

18 months after police shot an unarmed teenager in the bathroom of his Bronx home, the case has collapsed, as a jury declined to bring criminal charges in the case. The decision spurred calls for a federal civil rights investigation and an independent prosecutor. [New York Times]

The Japanese government said it will step in and take “firm measures” to combat leaks of radioactive water at the crippled Fukushima power plant. Government officials said 300 tons of radioactive water was leaking into the sea each day since early in the crisis, caused by the tsunami and earthquake that struck on March, 11, 2011. [CBC]
