Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Canada’s first openly gay premier, received a hero’s welcome from those gathered at the final day of the Pride Week. Bob Rae and Justin Trudeau were there too, and when the latter was asked what he’d say to Russian President Vladamir Putin regarding his country’s brutal gay rights record, he said he’d say, “modern up.” [Toronto Star]
Toronto police are looking for witnesses after a woman’s body was pulled up from the water near Ontario Place. Police said they don’t know how the woman ended up in there and are treating the death as suspicious. [CBC]
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired David Bolland from the Chicago Blackhawks, who scored the Stanley Cup winning goal last week against the Boston Bruins. It would have been better if he was on our team when the Leafs needed a winner against the Bruins, but then again, had we won that game he wouldn’t have scored the winner against the Bruins, making him a less attractive acquisition. Helicopters, water bombers and grounds crew were used to contain a forest fire near Wabush, a small town near Labrador. In a sunday meeting town officials said it’s still unsafe to allow residents to return home. [CBC]
Best Buy’s latest promotion has angered many, as what’s being promited in Quebec as “Moving Day Sale” is known as “Canada Day” in the rest of the country. Moving Day is a popular day to move since many leases end in June, whereas Canada Day is a holiday celebrating Canada. [CBC]
The Halifax Moosehead’s Nathan MacKinnon was made the first overall pick in the NHL draft by Colorado Avalanche’s new GM Patrick Roy. The Leafs drafted Frederik Gauthier, a large defensive centre who will no doubt develop into a major star who will one day bring us a Cup. [Globe and Mail]
INTERNATIONAL
Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians demonstrated against President Morsi in Cairo Sunday, the one year anniversary of his inauguration. Their goal is to show through sheer numbers that the country has turned against him, and there were crowds of similar size in many other cities around the country. [National Post]
President Obama visited Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. Obama challenged young Africans to continue believing in Mandela’s vision of peace and equality, and is leading an initiative to increase access to electricity, so there will literally be, “light where there is currently darkness.” [National Post]
US intelligence services are spying on the EU mission in New York and Washington, according to a top-secret document leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden. One document lists 38 embassies and missions as “targets,” and describes different spying methods for each target. [The Guardian]
