Omar Khadr eligible for parole in May 2013
Omar Khadr, back in Canada after spending a decade at U.S. detention centre Guantanamo Bay, may only have to serve another six months in Canadian prison. The 26-year-old is eligible for parole on May 2013.
Khadr was repatriated to Canada on Saturday morning to serve the remaining six years of his eight-year sentence. He is currently in the custody of the maximum security Millhaven Institution.
“Obviously the Americans are closing down the prison and wanted to send him back,” said Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, to CTV News. “He’s a Canadian citizen, he has the right to come back. We didn’t have much of a choice … and he’s back.”
Death of Alberta man in England ‘not suspicious’
Police say the death of a young Canadian graduate student and rugby player, whose body was found just outside of Bristol, England this weekend, was not the victim of foul play.
Garrett Elsey, 22, hailed from Sherwood Park, Alta., and was set to study international security in Bristol. However, after just a few hours in England, his body was discovered at a British recycling plant.
“It’s not suspicious, not a homicide or anything like that,” said Martin Dunscombe, a spokesman for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary, on Monday, to the Globe and Mail. Investigators have also found provisional findings from an autopsy.
Though officers thoroughly searched the collection bins and garbage trucks around the waste facility, as well as a nearby address, Dunscombe also told the Globe that “further investigations are needed.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger hopeful to win Maria back
“I’ll be back,” or something. Arnold Schwarzenegger is still hopeful he can win back his wife of over 26 years, Maria Shriver, though she filed for divorce back in July.
In a sit-down interview with 60 Minutes to promote his new autobiography, the aptly-titled Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, Schwarzenegger admitted to numerous affairs, and spoke out about fathering a child with another woman. The 65-year-old multi-hyphenate actor said he became an “expert in living in denial,” and that he never actually spoke to Mildred Baena, his former housekeeper, about their son, and would just slip her extra money on the side.
Schwarzenegger also said he kept secrets from Shriver because he “didn’t want endless conversation about it at home.” But the question remains, if you were Maria Shriver, would you take Arnold back after all of his True Lies?
Schwarzenegger will be signing copies of his new book at the Indigo Manulife Centre on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 12 p.m.
