Patti Smith’s spring exhibit at the AGO, Patti Smith: Camera Solo, is sure to draw in the crowds when it opens on February 9th, but it will be nothing compared to the group that will turn out for Smith’s two music and poetry sets at the 1st Thursdays monthly art party on March 7th.
Tickets will be slightly more expensive than the usual $10 it takes to get into the evening gallery activities and performances, but at $15, they’re a steal to see the legendary musician and mainstay of the 1970s and 80s punk-rock scene in New York.
Look for tickets to go sale for the show on February 8th at 10am, but even if you can’t get some of the much coveted tickets, the Camera Solo exhibit might be enough for you to get your Smith fix. The dreamy black-and-white photos (taken with Smith’s vintage polaroid camera) that make up the show include photos of what Smith refers to as the commonplace: religious iconography, gravestones and items belonging to other writers and artist, now dead.
If the hope, as Smith claims, is to inspire a renewed appreciation for the everyday with this exhibit, instagram may have beat her to the punch, but the quality of the show far exceeds the appeal of your moodily-hued lunch.
