Rogers customers who currently subscribe to The Movie Network and HBO Canada will now have access to TMN Go on their iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices, as well as their computer browser. It’s a bit confusing, but TMN Go is the same thing as HBO Go in Canada (TMN and HBO Canada are both owned by Astral Media), and users will have access to past and current episodes of HBO shows like Game of Thrones, Girls, True Blood, and VEEP, as well as full seasons of past hits like The Wire. TMN Go also bundles Showtime and Cinemax programming such as Banshee, Dexter, and Shameless. Basically, if it’s on TMN On Demand, HBO On Demand, or TMN Encore On Demand, it’ll be on TMN Go. The TMN Go app allows for pick up and play streaming, which means you can start a show and continue it on another device; a Watchlist function that lets you keep track of your favourite shows; and up to three simultaneous streams can run at a time, meaning other members of your household can use the service at the same time.
To use the service, download the free app at the Apple App Store, or simply go to tmngo.ca on your browser. You need a Rogers Anyplace TV username and password, but signup is free for Rogers customers at RogersAnyplaceTV.com. The service is available now, but only to about 75% of Rogers customers. Expect to see it become available for other cable or satellite providers over the next year. With Game of Thrones being one of the most pirated shows of last year, it’s probably not much of a coincidence that they’re launching this service now, with the season 3 premiere less than a week away.
Meanwhile in the US, HBO CEO Richard Plepler hinted last week that HBO Go might be going cable free entirely, meaning you wouldn’t need a cable subscription to use it. Instead, they’re looking at bundling it with your monthly internet bill.
