Former Much Music VJ George Stroumboulopoulos has been tapped by CNN to host a weekly chat show, similar to his current show on CBC, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight, which he has hosted since 2005. Known for getting authentic interviews from his guests, and as one of the most well known broadcasting personalities in Canada (especially among younger viewers), it’s no surprise that CNN has decided to bring Stroumboulopoulos to American audiences. The show will begin airing this summer, and features 10 one hours episodes of interviews with everyone from actors and musicians to world leaders. It will film in Los Angeles with a live studio audience.
“I feel really lucky to have been in broadcasting for 20 years up in Canada — and I’m excited to now also bring our conversations with people making the biggest news in entertainment, politics, sports, and pop culture to a whole new audience,” Stroumboulopoulos said following the announcement. CNN is also excited to bring this “fresh take” on the tradtional interview format to the U.S.
But don’t worry, Strombo isn’t leaving Canada forever. The CBC’s Kristine Stewart, Vice President of English Services, confirmed via Twitter that he would be returning to the CBC once filming in Los Angeles is over.
