Support is mounting for a Toronto District School Board teacher who was suspended with pay Friday for displaying sexual education posters in grade 7 and 8 classrooms that were originally intended for bathhouses usually frequented by gay men.
According to the National Post, more than 100 community members – including students, parents and former faculty members – attended a meeting at Delta Alternative School in Little Italy last night calling for the teacher’s reinstatement. The TDSB isn’t confirming the teacher’s name and is currently investigating the matter.
Designed by AIDS Committee of Toronto, the posters in question feature the phrases “If you like to fuck” and “Use your head when giving it.” When the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research reports that more than half of Canadian grade 9 students wrongly believe there is a cure for AIDS, you’d think the TDSB would use its head and get a grip when it comes to the often-lacking sex-ed in this province. After all, porn doesn’t teach a kid everything!
