One for the money, two for the better green, 3-4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine. The 15th annual Global Marijuana March is happening tomorrow, with more than 20,000 pot enthusiasts smoking up behind Queen’s Park to demonstrate support for the legalization of marijuana. The annual protest, part of the Toronto Freedom Festival, has never seen an arrest in its 15 year history, and is part of a global movement with events in 730 cities in 63 countries since its inception in 1999.
Beginning at “high noon,” the March begins at 2 p.m., making its way up to Bloor, where it will head east to Yonge, south to Wellesley and east to Bay, at which point it will disperse in a cloud of smoke. If you’re not in the mood to move, you can follow the demonstration live on Twitter.
Fun facts: cannabis is illegal in Canada with exceptions for medical usage, and Washington is the only state in the United States to have fully legalized marijuana (with restrictions on cultivation). Challenges to cannabis laws at the federal level have repeatedly been made by the superior and appellate courts in Ontario.
