The Greater Toronto Area will soon be welcoming two new area codes as telephone numbers under the old codes run out. The new area codes will come our way March 25, and until then numbers under the old codes will continue to be given out until they’re all gone. Toronto residents have the area code 437 to introduce to the current 416/647 family, and those in southern Ontario (Brampton, Missisauga, Oakville, etc.) will be adding 365 to the 905/289 area codes.
These new area codes have been created to accomodate the always increasing demand for wireless phones and devices, and won’t impact phone numbers with the old codes; this basically means that no, it won’t be long distance when you call someone with a new code. And yes, 9-1-1 is still just 9-1-1, no other numbers required. So if you were thinking about getting a cell phone (in case you don’t have one?) or switching up your plan, run to your local provider now before you’re ostracized by the gauche new area codes, just like 647 and 289 once were.
