The internet’s a confused beast. Hairy with seventeen arms and the head of a blue bird, it’s always speaking in contradictions like “screw context, microblogging rules” or “people love reading essays on their iPhones on the bus”. Still, one of the writing styles that seems best suited for the web is the list–succinct, quantifiable, and easy. I’m not saying that lists never existed before bloggers started using them (Cosmo loves them some lists) but with the internet, getting good people to tell you what they think is good has gotten so simple.
One of the best grouping of top 10 lists I’ve ever come across is the one compiled by the Criterion Collection, where they’ve asked creative people to share their favourite Criterion films. Like everything the Criterion Collection touches, these lists are pure inspirational gold, opening your eyes to a bunch of movies you’d never heard of (but Alec Baldwin really likes).
Because being meta is oh-so cooky, I’ve compiled my own top 10 list in response to the top 10 lists. Here’s Jessica Carroll’s Top 10 list of the Criterion Collection’s Top 10 Criterion films:
1. Anthony Bourdain (for Withnail & I)
2. Jane Campion (for Contempt)
3. Marcel Dzama (for M)
4. James Franco (for My Own Private Idaho)
5. Seth (for Tokyo Story)
6. Bill Hader (for George Washington)
7. Whit Stillman (for The Harder They Come)
8. Joe Mantegna (for House of Games)
9. Patton Oswalt (for Slacker)
10. Richard Linklater (for Andrei Rublev)
