Do Make Say Think: May 12 - May 18
What we're doing this week

This week, Toronto Standard’s Joanna Adams and Michael Kolberg collaborated on Do Make Say Think. With Mother’s Day on Sunday, and weather finally heating up, although it might get a little rainy, here are our picks for what to do this week.

Strike Out Cancer 2012, Saturday May 12.
The second annual bowling gala to benefit the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation will take place this Saturday, May 12. Dedicated to raising funds for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, last year’s inaugural event raised a total of over $92, 000. Not too shabby! The event, originally designed to benefit Russell Willer’s personal battle with the disease, is on even more of an upswing (that’s a bowling term, right?) this year, as his treatment was successful, and he is now cancer-free. Take that!

Z103.5 Presents Mega Magic, Saturday May 12.
“Z103.5? Is that radio station even still around?” asked Mike Kolberg. And, apparently it is. Join Z103.5 listeners and magic fans (imagine that Venn Diagram for a moment) for a night of, well, Magic and Mentalism, with international award-winning Magician Mike D’Urzo! The recent winner of the 2012 “Performer of the Year” award by Festivals & Events Ontario, so it has to be good, or something. Hey, I would go just to check out the crowd. Besides, magic!

Also, let’s discuss the potential of this unusual collabortion. “Magic? On the radio! You’ll have to take my word for it!” Reminds me of Wayne’s World 2′s Handsome Dan.

Chef Chuck Hughes Meet and Greet at the Bayview Village Indigo, Sunday May 13
Can you think of a better place to take your Mom, than to meet chef (and dreamboat) Chuck Hughes? If nothing else, it’s a great event to check out after brunch, or while waiting for your late brunch reservation, due to your forgetfulness. Note to self: Book a brunch reservation for Mother’s Day.

The Third Man, Monday, May 14
The Third Man – If you haven’t seen it, go see this fantastic film at TIFF Lightbox. Director Carol Reed captures Vienna beautifully in black and white. Orson Welles makes an indelible impression even with limited screen time. Graham Greene’s screenplay is thrilling. All time classic.

Kensington Brewing Company’s One Year Anniversary, Tuesday May 15
Free beer? Check. Free WVRST? Check. What more do you need to know? Seriously. Celebrate the one year anniversary of Kensington Brewing Company in style, and bring your friends.

Don’t Get Bored With Us And LeaveTuesday, May 15
An intellectually stimulating/mind numbing night of stand-up comedy at The Ossington hosted by David Dineen-Porter (aka @MottRomney2012) and Tom Henry, star of Say Yes To The Pants (he’s the one who wants to buy the pants). Featuring longer-than-five-minute sets from James Hartnett, Kathleen Phillips, Todd Graham and Mark DeBonis.

The Avett BrothersWednesday, May 16
The scruffy North Carolinians headline Danforth Music Hall after spending the last few years touring with Mumford And Sons and Bob Dylan. Check out their down-home roots-pop before the release of their upcoming Rick Rubin produced album.

The Cure for Courtney Fundraiser, Thursday May 17

A charity fundraiser that doubles as a bar’s (Fiction) grand opening? Not too shabby. To help raise funds for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma research and a lifesaving procedure for Courtney, this event is sure to be both important, and entertaining.

Meet the Stars of Anvil! Thursday May 17
Heavy metal rockers Anvil, stars of Anvil! The Story of Anvil, will rock The Rockpile. Is it a coincidence that an anvil IS a piece of heavy metal often used in close quarters with piles of rocks? Blacksmiths usually keep piles of rocks on hand, right? They have a song called Metal on Metal, which I assume is about blacksmiths. It has to be, right? Anyways, Anvil rocks, metal is heavy, and I wish I was a blacksmith.

Joel Plaskett Concert, Friday May 18
Joel Plaskett is a Canadian indie rock hero whose near 20 year career has seen him release music under the banner of bands like Thursh Hermit, Neuseiland, Joel Plaskett Emergency as well as some impressive solo records.  The scampy Haligonian will take the stage at Queen Elizabeth Theatre to play tracks from his latest release with Emergency, 2012’s Scrappy Happiness.
