The Urban Maze to Baku and Back
Swiss illustrator Ingo Giezendanner does some dense urban landscaping with just pen and paper.

Here at the Standard, we’re affected by the coordination of cityscapes—the complicated fusion of electrical wires, marble, and greenery. Swiss illustrator Ingo Giezendanner (aka GRRRR) makes works that take on this maze-like notion of urbanity, using just pen and paper. His book Baku & Back, produced in collaboration with art publishing house Nieves documents his summer spent on a train (avoiding airplanes) travelling from Zurich to Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, by way of Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia.

The 176-page publication takes you on a tour of these regions in succession, moving from the quaint Swiss train stations to sparse Caucasian landscapes. Detailed, full-page drawings mean that visits to the publication become surreal cinematic puzzles, not unlike an adult version of Where’s Waldo, but with graffiti tags and car brands rather than the striped and bespectacled hiker.

Available on the Nieves shop.
