How to finance the arts? This is a question that has haunted independent artists ever since commerce was invented. As an exercise in answering this question, Small Business ARTS Forum will beheld at the North York Civic Centre on April 24. Sponsored by the City of Toronto’s Economic Development unit, the forum will offer everything from practical tips on leveraging social media in developing a online presence, to broader discussions on what it means to be a “creative entrepreneur” in an ever-evolving art market.
In its sixth year, the forum is opening under the title, “Financing Growth in the Arts,” and will host Charles Pachter, whose portrait of Margaret Atwood now hangs in the Portrait Gallery of Canada, to give the keynote speech.
According to Enterprise Toronto (a division of the Economic Development unit) manager Katherine Roos, Toronto is home to some 130,000 arts and culture workers who collectively generate $9-bln in gross domestic product. This highlights the need for the creative economy to be better integrated into the larger financial rubric.
The forum is held on April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 5100 Yonge St. For more information see.
