Google Glass on the Runway
In a no-doubt continued plot for world domination, Google invaded New York Fashion Week by debuting Google Glass on the Diane Von Furstenberg Spring/Summer 2013 runway. On Sunday, stylists, models and Furstenberg herself donned the techy spectacles which captured video throughout the event. The result, released Thursday, is the first film ever to be shot entirely with Glass.
The film is narrated by and features Furstenberg as she prepares for and pesents her spring line. The famous Belgian designer agreed to bring Glass to the runway after trying a pair on with Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
“I am so excited to introduce Glass to the fashion world and use this revolutionary technology to give everyone a unique perspective into fashion,” said Furstenberg in a statement.
Google Glass is the result of Project Glass, Google X’s venture into the world of hands-free, augmented reality. The project, which first began testing in April, looks like a pair of glasses without the frames. A display screen is located above the user’s right eye and, through voice activation, Glass has the ability to take pictures, send messages, make phone calls and perform other functions.
As of now, Google Glass is not a finished product and has no finalized consumer availability date. However, a rough version was available for preorder to the developer-filled crowd at Google’s I/O in June. These $1,500 “Explorer Editions” will not ship until early 2013.
