According to Statistics Canada the number of Canadian farms has fallen 10.3 per cent between 2006-2011.
The newest agriculture census which was released Thursday, shows that that there were 205, 730 farms last year, down by 23, 643 over the past five years.
This decline has been evident since 1941.
The only province that hasn’t experienced the decline except Nova Scotia, where it rose 2.9 per cent.
StatsCan also found that more farms were switching from livestock-based farms to crop-based farms, and that farms are getting bigger.
Over the past five years, the average size of Canadian farms has increased 6.9 per cent from 295 hectares to 315 hectares.
