Creative Process: Rudsak
How does a brand famous for down-filled and leather jackets transition into summer?

Whenever I think of Rudsak, the Montreal-based label run by Evik Asatoorian, I immediately conjure up visions of luxurious leathers and fur-trimmed outerwear. So when I received a press kit detailing Rudsak’s extensive summer collection, I had to take a moment and say to myself “There’s a summer collection??”

Stupid question, of course. But surely I’m not the only one who hears the name Rudsak and thinks outerwear. The Canadian label showed a fabulously cozy fall collection at Toronto’s most recent fashion week. Down-filled and leather jackets were on every model in a show that was very much what we’d expect from Rudsak. In addition to visiting Rudsak’s store on Queen Street West, I interviewed Asatoorian to ask about the major challenges Rudsak faces when transitioning between winter and summer design.

What is the vibe at Rudsak for Spring/Summer 2012?

Cool, effortless, and chic.

How would you describe the summer collection?

Lightweight leathers for frisky spring temperatures, trenches for April’s showers, and knit apparel for summer heat balanced with statement handbags and footwear for all Mother Nature’s moods.

Do you prefer to design for the summer months or winter?

Both bring forward different excitements; winter allows us to excel in what we’ve built on reputation on being outerwear whereas summer’s detailing is emphasized mainly on handbags and footwear. Winter is all about designing that perfect second skin; spring and summer dressing is dependent on the weather– the collection has to be varied to flatter whatever the day may bring.

How does a label that is known for their thick winter materials and styles translate to a summer collection?

Adaptation of the weather– summer allows commodities like apparel, handbags and footwear to take center stage; spring still necessitates the need of outerwear but as the season warms up, other players start to take notice to the public. Rudsak is more than just an outerwear company- it’s head to toe styling.

Are the same sorts of fabric (ie leather) used and if they are how are they manipulated to be appropriate for warmer climates?

Leather is a second skin, each unique to itself. Heavier, thicker leathers are selected for the cooler months while soft lightweight leathers are predominately used as key accent features. Outerwear reflects a touch while again handbags and footwear get all the attention.

How easy is the transition?

It isn’t easy. Through the winter months, there’s that one jacket that is usually worn day in and day out, sunshine or overcast– there’s no hesitation as to what you’ll be putting on. Spring and summer however are so variable depending on the weather; people become a little free spirited– the challenge is to think of all potential forecasts and design a collection that works with any kind of day.

How does one keep outerwear fresh?

Outerwear isn’t simply about sheltering yourself against weather conditions; it’s become a statement piece. Certain styles will always remain classic and timeless; it’s not about inventing unorthodox shapes, rather its finding a way to reinvent what’s great which is best done in the details.

The summer palette is full of muted shades. Is that a label trend or is it specifically for SS’12? Why did you choose not to use any bright shades that are on trend?

Rudsak remains timeless season after season. While popular trends and colors are seen in handbags and footwear however with apparel and outerwear, Rudsak stays true to our philosophy: classic styling for the sophisticated artist.

Who is the ideal Rudsak man and woman?

Those who flourish with the spirits of James Dean’s rebellious allure and Audrey Hepburn’s pristine elegance.
