Lundström Brings Old Time Glamour (can you say Upper East Side?) Back to the Runway
Toronto Fashion Week: Lundström Fall 2012

The Lundström Collection was, like many other designers and brands this week at Toronto Fashion Week, heavily inspired by the 1960s. Pretty (bad word, but they were!) cocktail dresses were cut to accentuate the feminine silhouette, and were accessorized with crystal brooches, pink fur shawls, and black satin sashes. Bouffant hair, made famous by the inimitable Jackie O, took the old-glam inspiration one step further. And in a sea of super tailored and edited collections that have shown this week, Lundström brought fun Upper East Side glamour back to Toronto – a refreshing change that didn’t take itself too seriously.

As the collection moved through a collection of elegant peacoats, knit capes, floral tapestry jackets (very similar to Martin Lim), and tailored pencil skirts, some pieces began to veer more into the menswear side of things; oversized white collar shirts and overcoats were kept feminine, though, with headbands or crystal earrings. At the end, a series of full-on glamour gowns stole the show: gathered voluminous skirts in a mullet shape (that is, short at the front and long at the back), were show in satin and lace materials. Although Lundström is known for its sophisticated ready-to-wear, I think the rise of an evening gown line is much on the horizon. At least I hope so.
