It’s not another boring make up campaign. It’s M.A.C., through the lens of feminist artist, instantly recognizable photographer and anti-beauty icon Cindy Sherman. When the world-popular Canadian cosmetics company teamed up with Sherman, known for questioning social norms of female beauty through her self-portraiture (although it’s never herself she’s photographing, only the various guises and cliches of Hollywood womanhood), it felt like the twilight zone.
Inspired by Sherman’s photographs for M.A.C., and the brand’s fleshy, vibrant fall colours, we handed off this week’s Beauty Myth to Team Art. The Toronto-based art and design collective admires Sherman because she is “perhaps one of the great practical jokes played on the art world, a world well known for its jokers.” Its four members–graduates of OCAD, Ryerson and George Brown–collaborate to create novelty items ranging from pocket kaleidoscopes to 90’s boy-band colouring books. This time, they joined forces to paint Cindy Sherman as you’ve probably seen her before–but in all-M.A.C. makeup.
