When I was growing up my father would drive me to school every morning and pick me up every night. As he would glide up to the curb, I’d blast Eminem from my Walkman, and resentfully crawl into the ink-blue car. Thick and sweet as molasses, Patsy Cline’s music would pour out from the vehicle’s cracked windows as we rolled down the dark and winding road back home.
“Days may not be fair, always. That’s when I’ll be there, always.” Patsy would chime.
“Play Eminem,” I’d snarl over her.
“Ha!” My father would conclude as he turned up the music.
“Not for just an hour, not for just a day, and not for just a year… But, always.” Patsy would sing, leading us home in a booming echo that left the car in a vibrating dance with the road. I’d let Eminem continue to play in my earphones, attempting to drown out the sound.
“One day you’ll like this,” my father would say, “you’ll see.”
When we’d go on long drives, before the days of iPhones and roaming, I’d inspect the CD covers in the glove box and find Patsy staring back at me over layers of cowboy fringe. Being at the peak of my tweenage-angst phase, I’d glare back at her smiling face and cringe. “Who would wear that?” I’d think to myself. It turns out, however, that Marchesa, Gareth Pugh, Ralph Lauren, Tory Burch, Rodarte, Versace, and Saint Laurent, among many others, would in their Spring 2013 collections.
Fashion is no stranger to fringe. The trend has slid in and out since the early 20s. Yet, this season only further proved the versatility of the textured tassels that cowboys and flappers fell in love with decades ago. The looks that populated the runways of Spring 2013 looked like they had taken Patsy Cline’s traditional fringe-covered coats, sliced them up, and plastered them over skirts, shoes, tops, and hats. And while a fringe-covered hat may not be the exact look you’re going for on a Saturday afternoon, we’ve narrowed down the most wearable of the cowboy-meets-flapper trend below, plus included handful of pieces under $100.00 to help you get the iconic look for less.
