People is reporting that Tom Cruise, 49, and Katie Holmes, 33, are calling it quits after five years of marriage.
Holmes’ attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, confirmed the news, telling People, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.”
“Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
The high-profile couple, commonly referred to as “TomKat” in the press, married in a Scientology ceremony in Bracciano, Italy, on November 18, 2006. They have a six-year-old daughter, Suri, who has achieved unique notoreity for her “grown up” style, and assumed sassy attitude.
The Rock of Ages star was previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children. Rogers is oft-credited for introducing him to Scientology.
From the start of their union, the couple has been under intense media scrutiny over the validity of their relationship. Soon after, when Cruise made an unconventional appearance on Oprah on May 23, 2005, and jumped on the couch to declare his love for Holmes, skepticism intensified.
Since then, the couple has made several prominent appearances at each other’s film premieres, broadway debuts, and events, giving the impression to many, that their relationship was, in fact, ironclad. Busy on-set with their latest projects, Cruise is shooting Oblivion in New York City, and Holmes recently finished filming an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
At the 2012 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, one of their last public outings, the couple took romantic pictures in a photo booth.
R.I.P. TomKat.
