IBM is getting into the business of predicting fashion trends. Surprised? So are we. The technology company used analytics to measure social sentiment and found that Steampunk, the sci-fi subgenre celebrating Victorian-era and American “Wild West” style and industry, was getting a lot of attention.
IBM thinks Steampunk’s on its way to being adopted into the aesthetics of fashion and furniture designers, and spreading to mass production this year. Based on their infographic, it looks like most of the talk is happening on game sites. Video games have seen their characters get “steampunk makeovers” recently, and maybe that explains the LCBO Steampunk-style Gentleman’s League Configurator we told you about last week.
As crazy as it sounds, IBM may not be far off in their prediction. Afterall, even though the film was overlooked for a Oscar nomination, the costumes in Django Unchained certainly fit the Steampunk mold.
