Beauty Myth: Lauryn Hill
Every other week, an artist or illustrator paints her beauty icon using only makeup. This portrait is inspired by the season's richest, glimmering hues.

Rarely has someone who needed makeup so little played with it so much, and so successfully. A beauty icon for the ’90s and always, the one/only Lauryn Hill, whose face could stop a train and whose eyes were once described by Essence as “like Bambi’s mother’s,” has worn every crazy shade of shadow, lipstick, nailpolish and glitter known to womankind. Our lovely fine-arty intern Elise Troister is as Hill-obsessed as anyone, and here in this fifth installment of the Beauty Myth, she’s painted Lauryn in the season’s richest purples, orange-reds, and browns. (Yes, it’s all makeup. Previously: Elise painted her other music-and-beauty icon, Joni Mitchell.)

SKIN: To get Ms. Hill’s indefatigable glow, Elise mixed Revlon PhotoReady Foundation in “Mocha” ($19.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart) with Quo’s Skincredible in “Buff Beige” ($22 at Shoppers). For the deepest glimmer, she used NARS Shimmer Eyeshadow in “Ponderosa” ($29 at Holt Renfrew, 55 Bloor St., 416-922-2333, and The Bay), part of their special holiday collection.

HAIR and LIPS: Lauryn Hill would love a NARS lipstick called “Joyous Red” ($30 at Holt Renfrew), you just know it. Elise blended the on-trend rust with NARS Longer-than-Life Eyeliner in “Via Appia” and the delicious “Bourbon Street” ($25 each at Holt Renfrew and The Bay).

JEWELLERY and NAILS: Setting off all the warmth, Elise used the coolest thing, NARS Shimmer Nailpolish in “Space Odyssey” ($21 at Holt Renfrew) to paint Hill’s signature hoop earrings and choker.

EYES: Gemmy purple eyeshadow is back, oh yes. Here we see Quo‘s All-About-Eyes palette in “Plum’s the Word” ($25 at Shoppers) and eyeliner in “Amethyst” ($14).
