After the Wedding
Morning Cable: The election endorsements cometh and Superman renounces his U.S. citizenship.

You can stop wondering if your invitation will arrive in time. It’s finally over, we know who designed the dress, and we Canadians can get back to pretending we’ve overcome our colonial roots.

Yes, Canadians watched the royal wedding, including our correspondent Denise Balkissoon, even as some polls showed that as many as 80 percent of Britons had no interest in the event, and as many Londoners as possible wanted to flee the city for the weekend.

Some Britons did show up, although a few probably regretted it as police made 18 arrests along the route. Included among those arrested were three protestors who planned to use a guillotine as part of their action, showing a distinct lack of historical knowledge. The guillotine traditionally being reserved for the execution of French nobles.

In the latest blow to the prestige of U.S. foreign policy, Superman has renounced his U.S. citizenship: “because he’s tired of his actions being construed as instruments of U.S. policy.” In turn, Donald Trump has ceased demanding the man of steel produce his birth certificate.

Back in Canada, hospitals are debating whether they should be performing organ transplants on foreign patients or restricting such services to Canadians.

The big papers have begun issuing their election endorsements. The Globe and Post are vouching for Harper. So far the Star has simply opposed the Tories without endorsing any of the others. The Sun has yet to offer an official endorsement, but we suspect they may forgive Ignatieff for loosely quoting Chairman Mao and throw their weight behind the Liberals.

Among the nation’s columnists, Andrew Coyne at Macleans offers one of the more thoughtful dispatches on who’s getting his vote, surprising some perhaps by arguing for the Liberals. For Coyne, the Harper Conservatives must be held to account for their “long train of offences against democratic and parliamentary principle.”

As for our mayor, Rob Ford has announced he’s endorsing Stephen Harper.

In other news, a new study finds that Lake Ontario is wet.

The Ford administration has made its first move in a plan to sell off Toronto’s waterfront. The Corus building will be put up for auction. Well, somebody will have a lovely view from their office window.

The battle for control of the Toronto Humane Society continues with its ousted former president running for re-election to the board. Wow, it’s just like real politics, except the stakes are much higher.

A toy bulldozer has raised over $5,000 for charity over nine years. The little yellow toy just keeps coming back year after year.

THE LAST

And because this is Canada, a new NHL playoff prognosticator has emerged. Trikxy the cow accurately picked six out of the eight first-round winners. Now she’s picked San Jose, Vancouver, Boston and Washington to advance from the second round.
