Best Thing on the Internet Today: Star Trek Engine Noise vs. Shit Girls Say

What’s funnier? Nerds making noise or guys pretending to be girls? Help settle our in-office debate!

On one hand, Star Trek is undeniably funny. If you know one, or better yet, if you are one, you know that fans of Star Trek: TGN are a special breed. They do weird things like argue about which member of the Ferengi race is most annoying; they have Captain Picard shrines under their beds. Obsession is inevitable: if you’ve spent the hundreds of hours it takes to watch a series with 7 seasons, and (on average) 26 episodes, 45 minutes each, per season, you’re bound to talk about it.

On the other hand, Shit Girls Say is just, like, so spot on. If you have a friend who’s a big fan of “Shit Girls Say,” they work in PR, and they like martinis a lot. Or they know a lot of people who do.

For fans of intelligent YouTube editing, the Star Trek video, below, is a humorous conceptual exercise in ambient noise. In fact, it’s called “Star Trek TNG Ambient Noise Engine (Idling for 24 hours)” and it’s exactly what it sounds like–a 24-hour long stream of an idling Starship Enterprise with engine sound! (Bonus: Really great at helping you sleep if you have loud roommates/children.)

Shit Girls Say just got a web series, and not only is it really entertaining, but also, it’s local (spot Queen Street, just west of our own quarters). Put together by local graphic designers/filmmakers Graydon Sheppard (he made Feist’s new album cover) and Kyle Humphrey, it has super-quick, effective comedic editing and a Juliette Lewis cameo in which the galpals hug one another and scream.

But which wins the title of funnier, better, more entertaining today? In essence, the argument boils down to the side of the culture spectrum you identify more with: nerds or bros. If you have a tendency towards sardonic internet humour, then you’re bound to choose the Star Trek video. But if you’re more partial to, say, kitschy cocktails and witty real-life commentary, Shit Girls Say is the clear victor. And because we’re a diverse group, the staffers at the Standard have been having a raging argument as to which one takes the crowd. (Sssshhh: I vote Trek, but don’t tell SNP).
